Planet Earth III Deserts and Grasslands Flow Motion 2023

I often get asked, ‘What is the most amazing thing you’ve worked on?’ The answer, hands down, is BBC Planet Earth II, particularly the opportunity to work on the Cities episode. Hearing Sir David Attenborough’s iconic narration over footage I had captured was incredibly cool.

A few years later, I had the opportunity to work on two sequences for Planet Earth 3. The first one is part of the Deserts and Grasslands episode. The sequence, starting around the 26-minute mark, features a blend of remarkable drone footage of vast herds of wildebeest and flooding in Namibia, captured by Blackthorn.tv, and an extended time-lapse by Tim Shepherd Studios. Additionally, it includes amazing archive shots of predators hunting and failing to catch their prey. Being a lion is hard work, after all.

This project was produced by Kiri Cashell, and working on it during lockdown was one of my first opportunities to direct remotely. The result is a visually stunning portrayal of the world’s deserts and grasslands, showcasing the intricate beauty and resilience of these environments.
